The Shirt Dress is loosely based on some of the lines of the Crofter Top, which started what is to become a collection of Layercakes with straighter, more classic silhouettes, yet maintaining unique properties in versatility and fit.

Similarities include the sleeve inset and shape, and the deep closed cuff to allow folding up to create a bracelet-length or 3/4 length sleeve.

The dress is cut very loose, to allow you to wear it as an oversized shirt. It has ties attached to create multiple silhouettes that are as loose as you like, or more fitted, which makes for a lovely retro look.

The dress has a slight A-line and big pockets set into the side seams.

The hemline is stepped, about 2in longer in the back, and with a split on both sides
The Crofter is made using our signature mid-weight washed linen and in limited edition super-fine wool fabrics.

Styling tips:
Bottoms - wear with Breeches, a Panel Skirt, Slackers or your favourite jeans
Cocoons - throw over a Playsuit or Baggies and Top combination

The Slow Wardrobe sizes
We follow our own sizing system, recognising that the traditional system of "ladies dress-sizes" does not account for body shape and height. See how The Slow Wardrobe sizes relate to body measurements HERE.

We do everything we can to be truly size-inclusive. We can highly individualise your Layercake, by adapting the standard fit and/or choosing a non-standard fabric/colour.

Linen Care & Washing Instructions
Every Layercake has washing labels sewn into them, usually in the left side-seam.
All our linen is pre-shrunk, unless stated otherwise and can be machine-washed at 40º C and either line-dried or machine-dried. If you machine-dry them, take them out of the dryer as soon as it finishes and hang them up straightaway, then you will not have to iron them.

Our Linen
Linen is one of the world's strongest textiles and most sustainable fashion choices, creating zero waste as every part of the plant is used (for textiles and food). Our linen is all European grown, yarn-dyed and woven especially for us, then boil-washed to pre-shrink it.

Find out more about our linen.

Wearability
Linen is not only a Summer fabric, it is also a natural insulator, providing warmth when it is needed and offering the perfect base for a layered look, trapping air between the layers to keep you cozy year-round.

Wool Care & Washing Instructions
Note: all Layercakes have washing labels sewn into them, usually in the left side-seam. We recommend washing wool as little as possible. Wool Layercakes tend not to be worn next to the skin and can be kept going for a long time before a wash is really necessary. Any spills etc. can most easily be removed by spot-cleaning with some water and a cloth.

When it is time to wash, we recommend hand-washing. Wool cycles of different washing machines vary, so while you know your washing machine best, if in doubt stick to hand-washing. There are a number of hand-washing detergent brands (we sell Soak) that can be added to the water, add the garment, wet it thoroughly and then just let it sit. Take the garment out of the water, no rinse necessary, and put it dripping wet in the washing machine for a short spin cycle and hang to dry. Wool Layercakes can also be dry-cleaned.

Our Wool
We produce wool Layercakes in smaller quantities compared to linen, so we rarely have fabric custom-woven for us. The rest of our wool fabrics have been woven in the UK by other manufacturers, but become surplus to their production needs. This gives small businesses like The Slow Wardrobe access to high-quality, often custom-woven wool fabrics in small quantities.
