Details
Two shapes, with opposite hemlines, both made in our Scottish Large Check Wool (with linen facings). Both the Smock and Tabard are over-pieces, meant to be worn on top of other garments. The armholes are deliberately large and they have a big pocket on each hip.
This wool fabric can be hand-washed. We recommend Soak and as part of this pre-order you will receive a 90ml bottle of Soak with our complements (RRP £9).

Length from shoulder (size 2 Smock): 90 cm (36 in) front and back, dipping to 115 cm (45 in) at the sides – slightly shorter in the smaller sizes.

Size 3 Petite: available both in the Smock as well as the Tabard shape for size 3's of 5'4" or less.

Key features:

  • made from top quality Scottish-woven 100% wool
  • nice big pockets on both sides
  • designed for a range of different shapes and sizes

The Slow Wardrobe sizes
We follow our own sizing system, recognising that the traditional system of "ladies dress-sizes" does not account for body shape and height. See how The Slow Wardrobe sizes relate to body measurements HERE.

Smock/Tabard/Mini Tabard/Tail Smock/Felted Wool Jacket
These garments are designed to fit a very wide range of sizes and heights, from a UK size 10 to 28. Check these garment measurements to give you an idea of their dimensions.

Apron:
The Apron sizing is close to our Smocks and Tabards (0, 1, 2 and 3) so if you know your Smock/Tabard size then choose the corresponding Apron size. However, the Apron shape is more open around the bust, so there is some more flexibility if you prefer to wear it more or less fitted.
NOTE: length measurements are taken from the top of the shoulder straight down to the bottom hem.

We do everything we can to be truly size-inclusive. We can highly individualise your Layercake, by adapting the standard fit and/or choosing a non-standard fabric/colour.

Wool Care & Washing Instructions
Note: all Layercakes have washing labels sewn into them, usually in the left side-seam. We recommend washing wool as little as possible. Wool Layercakes tend not to be worn next to the skin and can be kept going for a long time before a wash is really necessary. Any spills etc. can most easily be removed by spot-cleaning with some water and a cloth.

When it is time to wash, we recommend hand-washing. Wool cycles of different washing machines vary, so while you know your washing machine best, if in doubt stick to hand-washing. There are a number of hand-washing detergent brands (we sell Soak) that can be added to the water, add the garment, wet it thoroughly and then just let it sit. Take the garment out of the water, no rinse necessary, and put it dripping wet in the washing machine for a short spin cycle and hang to dry. Wool Layercakes can also be dry-cleaned.

Our Wool
We produce wool Layercakes in smaller quantities compared to linen, so we rarely have fabric custom-woven for us. The rest of our wool fabrics have been woven in the UK by other manufacturers, but become surplus to their production needs. This gives small businesses like The Slow Wardrobe access to high-quality, often custom-woven wool fabrics in small quantities.
