European washed linen tumbled at the mill for softness and durability.
Unlike most linens, our linen is dyed before it is woven, which allows us to create many cross-weaves. A cross-weave fabric is made up of vertical threads (the warp) in one colour and the horizontal threads (the weft) in a different colour. This style of weaving is popular with silk fabrics. The shimmery colour-changing effect that this creates in silk is known as shot silk. When applying this process to matte fibres like linen, the effect tends to be a deepening of the perceived colour of the fabric. Even after many washes, the colour remains more lively than that of fabric-dyed single-coloured linen.
Our mid-weight linen is suitable for a wide range of garments, from dresses to trousers, shirts and skirts. It is more tightly woven than most linen fabrics on the market, which is why it is heavier (garment-linen tends to come in between 150-180gms). The result is a fabulous drape, it is more hard-wearing and it creases much less.

Linen Care & Washing Instructions
Every Layercake has washing labels sewn into them, usually in the left side-seam. All our linen is washed and tumbled, unless stated otherwise and can be machine-washed at 40º C and either line-dried or machine-dried. When line-drying, avoid exposure to strong direct sunlight as it may fade the colours. If you machine-dry, take it out of the dryer as soon as it finishes and hang it up straightaway, then you will not have to iron it.
Our Linen
Linen is one of the world's strongest textiles and most sustainable fashion choices, creating zero waste as every part of the plant is used (for textiles and food). Our linen is all European grown, yarn-dyed and woven especially for us, then washed and tumbled at the mill.

Wearability
Linen is not only a Summer fabric, it is also a natural insulator, providing warmth when it is needed and offering the perfect base for a layered look, trapping air between the layers to keep you cozy year-round.
